Energy Efficiency Tips

Conserving energy saves money. Since energy use is different from one industry to another. To help you achieve the most savings for your business, the following tips are broken up into categories that address the different needs of each industry. Select the industry your business falls under to see what you can do to start saving.

Important note about cleaning HVAC equipment

Churches

  • Convert T-12 lights bulbs to T-8 fluorescents.
  • Don’t heat or cool sanctuary areas on the days that they are not in use.
  • Pre-cool appropriate areas that will have a large amount of people.
  • Maintain baptism pool at minimum temperatures and use an insulated cover when not in use.

Colleges and Universities

  • Upgrade T-12 lights to T-8 fluorescents.
  • Replace incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescent lamps.
  • Use minimum temperatures so that heating and cooling is used only when needed.

Education (K-12)

  • Upgrade T-12 lights to T-8 fluorescents.
  • Use a programmable thermostat so that temperatures are set back when rooms are not in use.
  • Keep air conditioning filters clean and make sure the units are well maintained.
  • Turn off lights and equipment when it is not being used.
  • Start a conservation program at your school so students can learn the value of our resources.

Grocery Stores

  • Maintain all refrigeration equipment.
  • Use doors on refrigerators instead of open refrigeration cases.
  • Upgrade T-12 lights to T-8 fluorescents.
  • Maintain uninterruptible power supply (UPS) system to ensure reliability.

Healthcare

  • Use ENERGYSTAR® rated equipment for laundry.
  • Use compact fluorescent bulbs instead of incandescent bulbs and change T-12 lights to T-8 fluorescents.
  • Use sterilization equipment that has a shut off function, for when it is not in use.
  • Use high-quality filters to keep equipment clean.

Hotels/Lodging

  • Replace incandescent bulbs with compact florescent lamps.
  • Use ENERGYSTAR® rated washers and dryers.
  • Keep air conditioning and heating equipment clean so that it may function at its best.

Manufacturing

  • Try and complete tasks that use a large amount of energy during ‘off-peak’ hours to save money on demand charges.
  • Evaluate all lighting to make sure you have the right light levels, recommended by the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES), and the most efficient light source.
  • When using compressed air, use the lowest pressure that will be acceptable for the process.
  • Use high efficiency motors.

Multi-Family Housing

  • When possible, use ceiling fans instead of air conditioning.
  • Replace incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent lamps.
  • Keep appliances clean and well maintained.
  • Use insulated covers on hot tubs.

Office Buildings

  • Use Low-E glass on office windows to regulate heat gain.
  • Upgrade T-12 lights to T-8 fluorescents.
  • Install an energy management system that controls lighting, HVAC and other building components.
  • Install occupancy sensors that turn lights off when kitchens, restrooms and offices are not occupied.

Restaurants

  • Upgrade T-12 lights to T-8 fluorescents in kitchens.
  • Keep air conditioning equipment clean so that it functions at maximum efficiency.
  • Use high-efficiency equipment for cooking.
  • Install a vestibule to regulate open doors and help maintain indoor temperatures.
  • Install vent hoods so that they are not drawing conditioned air out of the building.
  • Prioritize kitchen tasks so that all equipment is not in operation at the same time.

Retail Stores

  • Use the appropriate lighting for each section of your store and make sure that all of the lighting color is uniform.
  • Keep air conditioning filters clean and make sure the units are well maintained.
