Energy Efficiency for Utilities Buildings
Colorado Springs Utilities understands that reducing energy use for our own facilities is one of the most cost effective ways to meet sustainability goals. We continue to incorporate energy and water conservation measures within all of our buildings, standard practice during new construction, renovation and planned building system replacements.

Largest School District Invests in Renewable Energy
In October, 2008, Colorado Springs’ District 11 Schools celebrated the inauguration of a 30-kilowatt solar electric system at a facility on Geiger Boulevard. The 168 panel system was made possible with a $92,000 rebate from Colorado Springs Utilities.

Public School District Decreases Energy Costs by 56%
When Manitou Springs School District decided to take on a comprehensive retrofit project for its seven buildings it was quite a challenge. The seven buildings that serve 1,400 students range in age from 5 to 90 years old. Most of the facilities were far from energy efficient. Jerry Zimmerman, director of buildings and grounds sought help from engineering consulting firm, EMC Engineers, Inc. of Lakewood, Colorado.

Five-Star Resort Hotel Completes Five-Star Lighting Retrofit
The Broadmoor Hotel, rated a five-star resort hotel by Forbes Travel Guide for 50 years, offers 744 guest rooms and suites. With 3 golf courses, 18 restaurants, 3 pools, retail shops, five-star spa and convention center, its facility management was serious about making an energy saving difference.

Greeting Cards Manufacturer Focuses on Energy and Water Efficiency
The state of the economy was impetus for Current, Inc., a large, direct marketing card and gifts manufacturer, to look for energy and water savings that would impact their bottom line. With the help of Colorado Springs Utilities’ free energy audit, Current identified several no cost and low cost solutions to save approximately $80,000 annually in utility charges.

Lighting Rebate Helps Save for Aeroflex Colorado Springs
Outdated lighting in their Garden of the Gods Road facility cost Aeroflex Colorado Springs too much in electric bills, and facilities manager Jim Hardin knew he had to make a change. With the help of Colorado Springs Utilities, Mr. Hardin converted the building’s T-12 fixtures to energy-efficient T-8 technology. Aeroflex received a rebate of $16,875 from Colorado Springs Utilities and estimates that with the new energy-efficient lighting, Aeroflex will reduce its monthly electric bill by $1,500.
