Springs Utilities answers the call of action through awareness and education

Governor Bill Ritter declared June 21 - 27, 2009, Colorado Lightning Safety & Wildfire Awareness Week. Springs Utilities supports lightning and wildfire safety through its tree trimming program and Wildland Fire Team.
Tree trimming:
The tree trimming program promotes “planting the right trees in the right place” and Springs Utilities is a Tree Line USA utility award winner for 14 consecutive years. Having trees trimmed back from power lines is particularly important during lightning, wind, snow and ice storms.
“Learning about trees before planting, and choosing the right trees for the right landscape prevents the risk of fire, injury or death,” said Phil Helvie, Springs Utilities’ operations supervisor.
Planting the right trees also decreases tree trimming costs. Springs Utilities spends about $1.2 million on tree trimming annually.
Wildland Fire Team:
The Wildland Fire Team consists of certified employee volunteers who assist firefighters and emergency responders protect our water sheds and storage reservoirs during fires.
“Our customers depend on us to protect their water when outside factors threaten its safety and reliability,” said Scott Campbell, Springs Utilities’ water services general manager.
Each member goes through rigorous training to qualify for the team and they commit to a two year term.
Electricity and power line safety tips:
- Storms sometimes result in fallen power lines. If you see a fallen line, stay far away.
- Water is a conductor of electricity, so be cautious during storms.
- Assume all power lines are energized and never touch one.
- Members of the media are invited to preview a tree trimming demonstration and ride in bucket trucks for a closer look. Also, our Wildland Fire Team will wear their safety gear, and exhibit their equipment and truck. Experts will be available for interviews regarding our award-winning tree trimming program, Wildland Fire Team and electric safety as it pertains to inclement weather, storms and lightning.
