Last month Engineering Supervisor Nick Miller received the RMEL (Rocky Mountain Electrical League) 2021 Emerging Leader Award. Miller was chosen for this award because he has demonstrated exceptional leadership and the value of continuous improvement with the development of the Performance and Reliability Unit in the Energy Supply Department.

"Nick has been key in developing a vision around the maintenance and predictive management of electric generating assets. Nick has developed the required processes and procedures as well as communicated his vision to the organization. He has also been a strong mentor to his team as he has worked to develop the skills required to support the organization in this area," Miller's manager Nick Peters wrote in his nomination form.

The Emerging Leader Award recognizes and honors RMEL members who are up and coming in their company and have had between five and ten years of experience in the industry, establishing significant contributions within their organization and have demonstrated the potential for leadership and continuing service in the electric utility industry. The award is conferred at the RMEL Spring Management, Engineering and Operations Conference in May.

Miller has been at Colorado Springs Utilities for more than four years and previously worked for a decade as a research engineer and technical manager with a sulfur scrubber technology company. He has shown his leadership and continuous improvement abilities with an important enterprise initiative around asset management, in which he is the co-leader.

Miller says his favorite parts about his job are helping to develop his employees and the change currently happening--not just in the organization, but also in the industry.

"I love getting my employees excited about the strategic initiatives the organization is embarking on right now. I come from a research and development background and things were constantly changing--every day was different. So I'm excited about the change of the future and I'm excited to get other people excited about that change."
