As summer heats up, many of us are using window/portable AC units, swamp coolers and attic fans to cool our homes. It's important to use them safely.
New or remodeled homes often have advanced airtight windows, which increase the risk for a negative pressure situation and carbon monoxide poisoning if precautions are not taken.
Negative pressure occurs when air is being pulled out of the room and is not replaced. As air is not replaced, back venting can occur. This prevents exhaust from a water heater or gas-fired stovetop from escaping your home, which could lead to carbon monoxide poisoning.
