Water Conservation staff members have been evaluating landscape plants on-site for over three decades. The trees, shrubs, grasses and flowers growing in the garden thrive with minimal watering and adapt well to various weather conditions such as heat, hail, wind and snow.
Exploring the garden can enlighten and inspire you on the following topics:
- Water-wise plants. Discover over 300 species of trees, shrubs, perennial flowers, groundcovers and ornamental grasses that are not only beautiful but also water wise. These plants require significantly less watering compared to traditional lawns, with most areas being watered once per week in the height of summer. A few areas need water only once a month or less. Implementing these selections in your landscape can enhance its appearance while reducing your outdoor water use.
- Water-wise grass options. Explore twelve grass types suitable for water-wise lawns or areas where you need a low-maintenance groundcover, some of which require watering only once a week. Witnessing these grasses in different seasons can help you select the best fit for your yard.
- Landscape inspirations. Five model landscapes in the Water-wise neighborhood serve as templates to address common landscaping challenges in the Pikes Peak Region. Each model features a water-wise grass along with a complementary selection of shrubs, flowers and groundcovers. Each template includes a plant list, layout and landscaping tips to aid in adapting the design to your own yard.
- Long-lasting tree choices. If you're going to be planting a tree in your yard, consider a species that will be an investment for future generations. The Demonstration Garden showcases recommended evergreen and deciduous trees at their mature size, providing insight into their performance in your landscape. Gain knowledge on planting and watering techniques for their success.
- Plants for pollinators and birds. As an e-bird hotspot, the Demonstration Garden attracts a variety of insects and birds, offering food sources and serving as a sanctuary. Learn which plants appeal to specific birds and pollinators and how to position them in your yard for maximum benefit.
- Irrigation methods and mulch/gravel options. Explore high-efficiency sprinkler nozzles, various drip irrigation systems and wood mulch and gravel choices. Learn about the advantages and disadvantages of different options for covering the soil.
- Access our resources. Visit the Conservation Center lobby to pick up plant lists, watering guides, landscaping tips handouts and information on energy and water rebate programs to support your home or business upgrades.
Plan to spend approximately 30- 45 minutes exploring the diverse garden areas. While the Conservation Center lobby welcomes visitors Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 5 p.m., the garden is accessible to visitors daily, for free, during daylight hours.
