When our current meters were installed in 2005, they were state-of-the-art technology. Of course, that was back when the first iPhone was still only in the development stages. Technology changes fast.
Fifteen years later, they’re nearing the end of their life cycle. We can’t continue to maintain them due to lack of available equipment and outdated resources.
What makes the new meters smarter?
The upgraded meters allow two-way communication between your home or business and our systems.
Protecting your privacy
Communication between our network and your home or business is conducted over a secure wireless network. It uses the same extremely low-frequency radio signals as your smartphone, radio and TV.
Smart meters do not collect, store or transmit any personal information. Like your current meter, only your utility use information is collected.
Installation process
You’ll receive a letter weeks before your scheduled visit, followed by a call in the days before we arrive.
Unless otherwise contacted, you do not need to be home for us to complete the upgrade.
Installers will drive clearly labeled ‘approved contractor’ vehicles, wear badges for identification and knock
on your door before work begins. You can ask to see identification or call us to verify their visit.
Door hangers will indicate that your meters have been upgraded or if further action is required. You may experience a brief pause in electric power. If you have multiple utility services with us, separate visits may be required.
