In the case of a structure fire or red-tagged appliance, repairs must be made before service is restored. We strongly recommend a licensed plumbing or heating contractor make all repairs. However, homeowners may make their own repairs if they currently occupy the home. Repairs to red-tagged appliances must be made within five business days of the tag issue date.
If your service is shut off in order to make repairs to your natural gas piping, an air test by a licensed contractor is required before your service is restored. Regional Building requires an air test as part of the inspection process to ensure the integrity of the piping and that there are no leaks.
Note: Not all plumbing and heating contractors perform air tests. Please confirm with the contractor before scheduling the work.
Steps to restore service
- Hire a licensed contractor to perform necessary repairs.
- The contractor will obtain any permits through the Pikes Peak Regional Building Department prior to making repairs.
- When the work is complete, the contractor will schedule an inspection by Regional Building.
- For a red-tagged appliance: After repairs pass inspection, the contractor can restore the natural gas service to the appliance or home. The contractor or homeowner must submit the completed red tag paperwork documenting the completion of repairs and accepting the responsibility (contractor or homeowner) for restoring service to the appliance or premise.
- For a structure fire: After repairs pass inspection, Regional Building will notify us to restore service. A technician will be assigned, usually within 24 hours. (This may happen separately for each service.) We will attempt to contact you when the technician is enroute, however you do not need to be present unless access to your meter is needed.
Note: We will not re-light appliances if an air test was performed. The contractor will need to return to light appliances once natural gas service has been restored.
