We conduct an annual water distribution system flushing program to improve water quality, to enhance flows in water distribution pipes and maintain hydrants for fire protection.
Over time, water pipes accumulate iron deposits and other particulates. While not harmful to customers, these substances can restrict flows, increase pumping costs, and create taste and odor issues. To rid the system of these accumulating particulates, the distribution system must be flushed at high velocities at key hydrant locations.
Important tip
During flushing operations, customers in the affected neighborhood may temporarily experience discolored water. If this occurs, we encourage you to allow water to run from an outside spigot for approximately 15 minutes or until clear. To avoid water waste, you can capture water from the spigot in buckets and use it on your landscape.
Hydrants used as part of the program will also be inspected and maintained to help ensure proper fire protection.
Our flushing program is consistent with industry practices and similar efforts are performed around the United States to keep water distribution systems performing at their peak levels.
The program does not impact our water rights or downstream water systems, and is operated in accordance with a Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment permit.
